One group - the Taunton Public Schools - contacted a group known as Energy Education, who helps develop energy conservation programs for U.S. school districts with the goal of converting dollars spent on energy to dollars spent on education. Taunton retained this group to help find ways to decrease its energy consumption and their bottom line of expenses.
Learning a new skill is important for kids development. After a few months of piano lessons, your kid might just find their new favorite hobby! Some kids love the instrument they start out with, and some dont. Some actually enjoy practicing, and others despise it. Once they get into the routine of practicing and attending lessons, they wont want to stop. Learning an instrument and developing a new talent is priceless.
A very simple toy is making a ball. All you need is a used grocery bag and newspaper or shredded paper. Kids can wad up the newspaper or shredded paper and stuff it into the bag. The bag can then be tied tightly and you have a light-weight ball that can be played with by kids of all ages. Need a basket for shooting? Find an old box, bucket or wastebasket. Kids can decorate them with crayons, paint or cut-out pictures. Or it would be safe to kick the ball around the house, too. Not only do kids enjoy making it, but have lots of fun playing with their own basketball or kick ball!
Whenever I do have to have a difficult discussion with one of my sons, I will often lay out the reason that I am upset or said another way, the purpose that I want to achieve. For example, I might say, Look, you and I both know that I want you to always be safe. Now we may disagree on what is safe enough, but I think we both agree on that goal. I may think you have to hold my hand to cross the street until you are 18 years old, you may think that bungee jumping from a helicopter over a minefield at age 8 is not unsafe. But we both agree that you should be safe. Correct? Once we set up a common goal, we can discuss and compromise on what is safe behavior.
