Listen to learn means not inserting ones opinion and not judging what the youngster says while the youngster is speaking. Parents have a natural tendency to approve or disapprove of young peoples statements. Parents first reaction is to evaluate from their own point of view and then approve or disapprove of what the youngster says. This is listening autobiographically. The tendency to make evaluations is common in almost all conversations, but it is much more intense when feelings are involved. An easy strategy for replacing this tendency of listening autobiographically is to cultivate the habit of listening to learn.
Alphabet blocks allow for social and emotional development among young children in two ways. First, when playing with other children, they learn to negotiate for the items they want to use and also to respect the ideas and opinions of others. Open-ended block play gives kids an opportunity to explore social behaviors and emotions in a safe environment. These benefits will transfer to other areas of the child's life, such as when they are playing with friends!
