Getting them all into the boat is hilarious. This book has bright, humorous illustrations and the text has a lot of rhyme, rhythm and repetition. Full of humour too and could be a catalyst for some great discussions.
Levine (1987) includes in the definition of dyspraxia difficulty with assigning the various muscles or muscle groups to their roles in the writing task. This definition focuses on the execution or output aspect of dyspraxia. According to Levine, in order to hold a pencil effectively and produce legible handwriting at an acceptable rate, the fingers must hold the writing utensil in such a way that some fingers are responsible for stabilizing the pencil or pen and others are responsible for mobilizing it. In a normal tripod grasp, the index finger is responsible for stabilizing the writing instrument and the thumb and middle finger are responsible for the mobility of the instrument during writing.
A more physical activity, also good for indoor family fun, is a simple game of Charades. Charades can be made into a humorous activity when the subject is centered on funny family moments like when the dog ate Mom's meatloaf or when the washing machine turned all of the laundry pink. Simply write down these moments of humor on little folded notes and place them in a bowl. Each family member picks a note from the bowl and must act out the subject accordingly. This provides the family an opportunity to learn that even stressful moments can be funny.
